Heartnut cultivars yield a heart shaped, easy cracking nut. Heartnut seedlings are listed throughout the trade as hardy in Zone 4. My experimenting has shown the same. Grafted cultivars are listed by almost every nursery as Zone 5. I am trying them all here in Central VT Zone 4, I think they will be ok in protected micro-climates, but only time will tell.
Heartnut trees can grow to 50 feet tall (15 m.) with a spread of 65-100 feet (20-30 m.). They get their name from their prolific production of a nut that looks, both inside and out, like a heart. A great tree for the North!
