All of our seedlings are from grown from seed collected from named cultivars growing in great orchards. These are trees known for large sized and easy cracking nuts. Wild Black Walnuts are delicious, but the shells can be very hard to crack and the nut meats are often small and trapped in the shells by the convolutions inside. While it should be understood that heterozygosity means that the traits of easy cracking and large nuts are not necessarily passed down to the offspring, many old-timey nut growers note that often the desirable characteristics are inherited in nut tree seedlings more frequently than, say, apples.
