The parents of these seed come from Dale Steig, Fred Ashworth and Badgersett Research Station., All these folks have been selecting for productivity and size for over 30 years.

These seed come from shrubs planted here at our farm 8-11 years ago, they have been collected from the best plants out of many hundreds we have grown here. Mostly selected for large size, a couple are medium sized but make so many nuts year after year we feel they are worthy of including. We also select for hardiness, vigor and thriftiness.

2025 was HUGE year for hazel here, with much heat and dry weather during ripening, these shrubs are about 8-15 feet (3-5 M) tall.

The Badgersett and Ashworth plants are mostly rounded in form whereas the Dale Steig plants are taller and quite upright. The Dale Stieg plants are remarkably similar -each and everyone-both in vigor, height and nut production. The Dale Steig trees have a higher assortment of oval/pointed nuts, while the Badgersett and Ashworth make mostly very rounded nuts

The Dale Steig plants seemed to tolerate this years drought weather slightly less well then the other two selections. I still think that overall these are the best selections we are growing.

This year I removed over 100 plants for non-performance. I also planted out about 50- 3 tear old clones from multiple sources.

Hazels seed should be stored moist and soaked for a couple/few days before planting in the spring. Very large seed benefit from carefully cracking the shell before planting, this helps insure higher germination rates.
